The Youth Day assembly at Summerhill International College on Thursday, 15th June 2023, was a remarkable event, brimming with inspiration, creativity, and the powerful voices of students. The assembly was led by Head Girl Matsipane Maponya – teachers, students, and the headmaster were all present for this incredible occasion. The students took over the assembly and captivated the audience with their own artistic expressions, speeches, and poems. They emphasised the significance of Youth Day, highlighting the sacrifices made by the brave heroes of the past who fought tirelessly for freedom and equality.
The assembly began with Warren Olifants, a natural orator, taking the stage and delivering an impassioned speech. He touched upon the struggles and triumphs of youth in today’s society, encouraging his peers to rise above challenges, believe in their dreams, and strive for greatness. Warren’s powerful presence and eloquence captivated the audience, leaving them with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
Next, Mandla Phakhati shared a powerful poem reflecting on the events of ’76. His words painted a picture of sorrow and resilience, paying homage to the young souls whose dreams were crushed by oppression. The poem served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the youth and their enduring legacy.
Matsipane Maponya, the head girl and a gifted poet, followed with an introspective and evocative poem that gave voice to the complex emotions and experiences of being a young person in a rapidly changing world. Her verses carried the weight of personal narrative, reflecting the resilience and strength of the youth. Matsipane urged listeners to pause, reflect, and celebrate the power of their generation.
The assembly continued with a collaborative creative piece by Mivuyo Toyi and Tshiamo Ngoma, two exceptionally talented students. Their performance showcased a unique fusion of visual art and spoken word, delving into themes of identity, resilience, and the power of unity. The audience was left awestruck by their artistry, which served as a testament to the creativity and talent flourishing within the school’s halls.
Finally, the assembly concluded with a speech by Kiara Gowrie, who tackled important social issues such as inclusivity, empathy, and the power of unity. Kiara’s heartfelt words resonated with the audience, encouraging everyone to embrace diversity and work together towards a brighter and more equitable future.
The Youth Day assembly at Summerhill International College was a testament to the immense talent, creativity, and resilience of the students.
