The Schools

We give our students a complete

educational experience

We believe, that in addition to the average education currently available in South Africa, it would be highly advantageous to place our students in a position where they can gain access to the prestigious tertiary education systems of other countries. We are excited by the prospect of expanding the opportunities available to our current and future students”, Mrs Sonja Morshead, Founder of Summerhill School.

The College offers the CAPS and Cambridge curriculum and Cambridge Assessment International Examinations.

This allows students to choose between two very highly recognised examining bodies.

The students are exposed to many codes of sport and various cultural and leadership programs. We are very proud to offer the President’s Award at the College. We have small class sizes and this ensures that the students receive the necessary attention.

The teachers at Summerhill encourage life-long learning through providing students with the skills to drive their own learning once they leave school.

Dear Summerhill College Family,

I take this time to express my warmest welcome back to the New Year, 2024. May it be a year filled with success, blessings, and rewards for hard work.

This year is a chance to reset, recalibrate, and start afresh. In short, a new beginning! With this in mind, I remind the community of the last statement in the 2023 end-of-year letter.

“Tell me and I know. Teach me and remember. Involve me and I learn”Benjamin Franklin.

My theme for the 2024 academic year is involvement based on being present in the moment with an absence of distractions. (devices etc)

So, we all commit to being involved, this is now the Summerhill Way!

As head of the College, I have to impress on myself, my staff, and the students to adhere to the following principles. (parents are not excluded)

  1. We need to collectively take care of our health and wellness. We cannot lead effectively, even ourselves, without being in good health. This is based on getting our, diets, sleep, exercise etc right, so we can function optimally.
  2. Being efficient and effective requires knowledge and wisdom. However, it is the wise application of acquired knowledge that creates true wisdom. Let us all strive for more wisdom.
  3. We are committed to building and endorsing a South Africa that is diverse, vibrant, hard-working and especially celebrates excellence
  4. As a school community, we continue to value and appreciate family and respect the support that comes with strong family bonds.
  5. We also need to say “no” more often. This is to eliminate distractions so as said before we are present in the moment.
  6. As a community, we continually find ways to ensure the youth can better themselves as they grapple with a very complex and ever-changing world.
  7. I reiterate, that this is the Summerhill Way! I leave you with a word of inspiration; “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. This ensures that a year from now you do not wish you had started today. Thus, the secret to your success is your daily involvement.”

However, it remains our collective effort to help create a better future for our children.

“Our aim at Summerhill College is to give our students as complete an educational experience as possible.

The school year is always filled with exciting challenges. It is our pledge at Summerhill to be committed to continuing the growth and development of each child in our care.

The many diverse learning opportunities in place for your children will challenge them intellectually, grow them socially and guide them towards independent thinking and problem solving.

Our teachers are chosen for their dedication and professional approach and their willingness to give untiringly every day to help grow and develop their students. They continue to develop personally and upskill, so as to remain in touch with the latest and greatest in education, ensuring the best possible learning environment.

Along with striving to promote comprehensive development in all aspects of each student’s life, we also strive to develop a body of students with sound character. We encourage our students to make good choices and decisions resulting in successful and healthy outcomes. We like to inspire our students to show the best of themselves every day and to make positive contributions both in and out of the classroom.

At Summerhill we encourage our students to take pride in themselves, their fellow students and most especially their school.
The College is a registered exam centre with Cambridge International Examinations. Cambridge qualifications are recognised in over 160 countries. We offer IGCSE (Grade 9 and Grade 10) and AS Level (Two year course. Grade 11 and Grade 12 equivalent). For more information on Cambridge, visit their website www.cie.org.uk.

We also offer the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) from Grade 9 to Grade 12.

Our students enjoy a wide range of sporting and cultural extramurals. We continue to develop the sports ethos in the College in order to set a good platform for becoming a competitive force in the community; especially as our numbers grow in the coming years.

Welcome to Summerhill College: A world class education…….unlocking the future!”

International education is an asset for those families who are faced with integrating their school-going children from one country to another. In South Africa, there is an increasing demand for highly educated school leavers with the ability to think on their feet. An internationally backed educational system will give students an “edge” in tough job markets both here and abroad.

Summerhill College has always prided itself on being able to teach students using the best study technology available to us. One of the main aspects of our study technology involves teaching students at the right gradient or degree of difficulty, mastering one thing well before having to move to the next step.

At Summerhill College, we encourage our students to take pride in themselves, their fellow students and most especially their school.
