Summerhill School is proud to announce that it has successfully achieved accreditation from Umalusi, South Africa’s Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training.
Over the past year, Summerhill was invited to participate in Umalusi’s national accreditation programme for independent schools. As part of this process, the school underwent a comprehensive evaluation that included self-assessment, extensive documentation reviews and a verification visit by Umalusi assessors.
For many families, this announcement may raise the question: “What does this mean?”
The answer is simple. Summerhill has been serving learners and families for many years, providing a nurturing and holistic educational environment built on strong values, dedicated staff and a commitment to developing the whole child. The Umalusi process provided an opportunity for an independent national body to take a detailed look at how we do what we do.
It was, quite simply, our turn to be assessed.
The evaluation looked at many aspects of school life, including leadership and governance, curriculum delivery, learner support, assessment practices, educator development, facilities, policies and quality assurance systems.
We are delighted that Summerhill successfully met the required standards and has been awarded accreditation to offer the National Curriculum Statement from Grade 1 through to Grade 12, leading to the National Senior Certificate.
While accreditation is certainly an important milestone, we see it less as a destination and more as an affirmation of the work that has been taking place at Summerhill for many years. It is independent recognition of the commitment, care and professionalism that our staff bring to the school every day, and of the trust that parents place in us.
This achievement belongs to our entire community. To our teachers who go above and beyond, to our leadership team, to our parents who partner with us, and most importantly to our learners who inspire us daily – thank you.
