We would like to congratulate our Grade 0 Class of 2026 on their outstanding results in this year’s Optima School Readiness Assessment.
Developed by Dr. Susan Le Roux of the University of Pretoria, the Optima Assessment has been a trusted benchmark used by our trained staff for the past 20 years, helping us measure school readiness and identify areas for support and growth.
This year’s Grade 0 group achieved a remarkable combined average of 82.7%, making it the second highest score achieved by Summerhill. This is an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to the hard work of our children, teachers, and families.
The assessment evaluates key developmental areas, including: Visual Skills, Auditory Skills, Spatial and Number Skills, Social and Emotional Development and Fine and Gross Motor Skills In addition, we administer our own Summerhill assessment focusing on phonetic awareness and early mathematical concepts.
One of the strengths of the Optima Assessment is that it is designed to be enjoyable and developmentally appropriate for young children. The process feels more like a fun activity than a test, allowing children to demonstrate their abilities in a relaxed environment. Where challenges are identified, we are able to provide targeted support in the classroom, at home, or through remediation, ensuring every child is fully prepared for Grade 1.
Importantly, no studying or preparation is required. The assessment measures natural developmental readiness, and even children with no previous schooling experience are able to complete it successfully.
As your first official “Big School” assessment—and probably the one you enjoyed the most—you made us incredibly proud. Congratulations, Grade 0 Class of 2026! Your enthusiasm, confidence, and readiness for the exciting journey ahead have truly shone through.
