Once a Summerhill Head Girl. Today, a university student, UNICEF leader and inspiring young changemaker making her mark beyond the classroom!

At Summerhill School, we have always believed that education is about so much more than academic achievement. It is about nurturing confident, compassionate young people who have the courage to lead, the determination to succeed and the desire to make a meaningful difference in the world.

And few stories capture this spirit quite as beautifully as that of our exceptional alumna, Matsipane Maponya.

A former Summerhill Head Girl and outstanding all-round achiever, Matsipane is already making remarkable strides in her journey beyond our school gates.

From Head Girl to Global Opportunities

Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Pretoria, Matsipane has continued to demonstrate the leadership, dedication and passion for service that distinguished her throughout her years at Summerhill.

Her journey with UNICEF UP, the University of Pretoria branch supporting the work of the United Nations Children's Fund, began as a volunteer. Through her commitment and enthusiasm, she was subsequently appointed to its Executive Committee — an incredible achievement and an opportunity to contribute to initiatives that make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Most recently, Matsipane had the extraordinary privilege of attending a UNICEF event where she met His Excellency Emmanuel Hategeka, Rwanda's High Commissioner to South Africa.

What an exciting milestone for a young woman whose leadership journey began right here at Summerhill!

A Summerhill Legacy of Excellence

For those who remember Matsipane's school years, her achievements will come as no surprise.

In 2024, she distinguished herself as one of Summerhill's most accomplished learners, collecting an extraordinary range of honours spanning academics, leadership, sport, culture and community service.

Her achievements included:

  • Head Girl and Head Prefect
  • Head of the Student Council
  • Head of her School Sports House
  • Captain of Sports Teams
  • Leadership Award
  • Sportswoman of the Year
  • Honours in Service
  • Full Colours in Service, Culture, Swimming, Netball, Softball and Sport
  • Senior Softball Player of the Year
  • Open Netball Player of the Year
  • District Netball Representation

An impressive collection of accolades, certainly — but what makes Matsipane's story especially inspiring is how she has carried those values and experiences into the next chapter of her life.

“My Leadership Journey Truly Began at Summerhill”

Perhaps the most rewarding part of Matsipane's story is hearing, in her own words, the role Summerhill played in shaping her journey.

“My leadership journey truly began and was nurtured at Summerhill.”

She speaks with tremendous gratitude about the people who helped her along the way, acknowledging her faith, her family and the teachers who encouraged her to believe in herself.

“Exceptionally grateful to my family — my heart and foundation, as well as the teachers and staff at Summerhill who have fiercely supported and championed me from day one.”

These words mean the world to us.

They are a wonderful reminder that the encouragement of a teacher, the opportunity to lead, the chance to participate and the belief that every child has something extraordinary to offer can have an impact long after a learner leaves school.

Once a Summerhillian, Always a Summerhillian!

Matsipane's story is one we are immensely proud to share with our entire Summerhill community.

From leading her fellow learners as Head Girl to serving on a university UNICEF Executive Committee and engaging with international diplomatic representatives, she is demonstrating what can happen when talent, hard work, compassion and opportunity come together.

Matsipane, we are cheering you on every step of the way!

Thank you for remembering your Summerhill roots and for showing our current learners that their dreams, ambitions and potential need never be limited by the walls of a classroom.

We cannot wait to see where your journey takes you next.

Your Summerhill family is incredibly proud of you!
