“Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato
In honour of National Reading Week and Literacy Day on Thursday, 8th September the JP Team came dressed as characters from Lewis Carroll’s much-loved book, “Alice in Wonderland”. The teachers created pure magic and entertainment for the children. “Alice” (Mrs Britz), “The Queen of Hearts” (Ms De Wet), “The White Queen” (Mrs Singh), “Mad Hatter” (Mrs Oates) and “Tweedledee” (Mrs Mutambiranwa) and “Tweedledum” (Mrs Riley)and the other peculiar anthropomorphic creatures from the story “Smoking Caterpillar” (Mrs Yaso), “Cheshire Cat” (Mrs Martins), “White Rabbit” (Coach Cynthia) and the “Cards” (Mrs Naidoo, Mrs Prinsloo and Mrs Knott) lead the students down the pathways of Summerhill to their classrooms.
Teachers read the story to their classes and observed the day with five minutes of silent reading. Students were enthralled by the different characters and got lost in the adventures of Alice. Each class witnessed the story come alive as told by their “favourite character”. As the book says “We’re all a little mad here,” and at Summerhill, we’re absolutely mad about books!
