Summerhill is affiliated to T.S.S.A (Thinking Schools South Africa) and fast becoming a ‘thinking zone’ – a space where our students are encouraged to think deeply and actively about their learning. We have created a pictograph representing our whole school thinking strategy and to make it exciting for our learners we have created a Thinking Mascot – Sammy Summerhill.
Each year teachers at Summerhill School are trained on how to implement new thinking tools in their lessons and create thinking opportunities in class.
We refresh the use of Dr De Bono’s Thinking Hats philosophy and we constantly encourage the use of T.S.S.A.’s 8 Thinking Maps.
This year we went on to explore the thinking tools of the Harvard Visible Thinking Routines and Habits of Mind reflection strategies. These routines aim to bring in a new energy in the teaching environment and promote deeper thinking within our students. It also makes deeper thinking more visible and enjoyable for our students and teachers.
We are proudly becoming a deeper ‘thinking zone’ and creating a more effective thinking school. There are going to be many more exciting plans introduced in the near future to pursue our passion of raising independent, mindful and higher thinking individuals.
Thank you Mrs Janessa Rajeev, Vice Principal Summerhill Preparatory School and Mrs Deshmee Chetty Thinking Schools Co-ordinator
