World Outdoor Classroom Day
To mark World Outdoor Classroom Day on the 17th May, Summerhill Preparatory School has launched its very own Forest School! An idea that has has fast caught on overseas, a Forest School is an outdoor classroom set in a forested area that allows students to learn any subject outdoors.
There is a growing amount of research and literature that discusses the benefits of children spending time outdoors including learning risk assessment, improving creativity and igniting a love for the environment. The lessons can be environmentally focused or be in any learning area.
The success of outdoor learning relies on stimulating the senses and teaching to students to enquire and investigate for themselves. As time goes on the school will be adding a weather station, bat boxes and bird feeders to allow students to learn about a variety of different topics in the forest school.
