Summerhill School – Johannesburg WESSA Eco-School of the Month
Summerhill School in Midrand, Johannesburg has been a part of the WESSA Schools and Youth programme for the past three years and is currently working towards their Gold award. The prestigious WESSA Eco schools Gold Award is achieved by showing the schools’ actions as a key contributor to the goals of the Youth programme. For the time being we are happy with Summerhill School – Johannesburg WESSA Eco-School of the Month.
Summerhill School has committed themselves to a culture of consciousness about the natural environment and its preservation, by consistently acquiring and building knowledge, planning and taking action. To document their journey towards a Gold award, they put all their initiatives and activities on the Summerhill School WESSA. The school chose to present their portfolio through the website instead of a physical file because they wanted to try something new and innovative while at the same time walking the talk when it comes to sustainability. The Eco-committee realized that the present and the future is greatly shaped by the internet, so what better way than to use that to their, and the environment’s, advantage.

Eco-Schools is a school-based environmental management, certification and sustainable development education programme of the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The programme is implemented in 67 countries around the world and by WESSA in South Africa since 2003. Eco-Schools aims to improve environmental management and environmental learning at schools by assisting them to grow and develop their environmental capacity. The programme supports the National Curriculum (CAPS) and benefits the school in terms of whole-school development and improvement. Again we are enroute to GOLD for Summerhill School – Johannesburg WESSA Eco-School of the Month.
