Summerhill Nursery School Science Fair
Forest Hall at Summerhill School came to life with a colourful display of science projects on Friday, 15th March for the Summerhill Nursery School Science Fair. The Grade 0’s showed off their wonderful creations based on the science theme of Birds, Bees and Butterflies.
Science and Thinking skills
Principal of the nursery school, Mrs Sonya Toet, said, “I was very impressed with the children’s ability to think and create using recyclable material. Summerhill fosters a love for science in children from a very young age.” Children are then encouraged to take these science and thinking skills further, by creating projects which are submitted to the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists when they are in Grades two, four and six after the Summerhill Nursery School Science Fair.
Bird feeders and bee hotels were a favoured choice for the children who were guided and assisted by their parents during the step by step creation process. Emphasis was placed on parents spending time with their children and encouraging them to ask questions about what would work for the end product. A poster was also created by each child to explain their ideas in detail. The end results were very impressive and students were articulate in explaining all their hard work.
Mpact recycling competition
Summerhill also participates in the annual Mpact recycling competition and has won several times. Children are taught to reduce, reuse and recycle on a daily basis both at home and in the classroom. We look forward to the next Summerhill Nursery School Science Fair.
