Uzayr Paruk, an amazing Summerhill Grade Six student has always been inspired by American gymnast Sofie Dossie and also calls himself a “self-taught” contortionist. Nothing is truer than that. He taught himself how to do handstands, chin stands, chest-stand, right splits, middle splits, the needles, etc. Uzayr learned all of this whilst watching YouTube videos.

Summerhill Student Uzayr Paruk with Blake Petersen

In February 2019, Uzayr’s mother chatted to a colleague at work, Adele Truter, whose daughter also does gymnastics. She told her about Uzayr and Adele was quite intrigued by what she heard. Adele invited Uzayr to attend classes at their club.

Lefido Acrobatics Gymnastics Club is located in Newlands and the coach there is Claudia Havenga. Uzayr was assessed as a level 5 gymnast and was partnered with 9-year-old Blake Peterson. Together they participated in a club competition hosted by Gymfinity on 18th May 2019. They received a gold medal! A second Gold followed on May 25th.

Uzayr will take part in one more club competition on 25th on the 8th of June, in order to qualify for the District Competition in August. If he is successful, Uzayr will participate in the Provincial Competition followed by the National Competition. We wish Uzayr and his partner all the very best. Summerhill is behind you all the way, Uzayr!
